Celebrating National Underwear Day

Underwear supplier celebrates the holidays fourth

August 9, 2006 is National Underwear day. Of course, at first it might sound a tad out-of-place in a culture that doesn’t seem to flaunt underwear (then again what culture does?) but if we have such frivolous holidays like Groundhogs Day, St. Patty’s Day and Secretaries Day, it is not going to kill us to celebrate our undies past, present and future.

According to the Web site Manstouch, the history of underwear can be traced back more than 7,000 years ago to the early days of the Egyptians who would wear simplistic loincloths which eventually evolved into the pull-up underwear commonly worn in the Medieval Time period. Now in the 21st century the reason why we wear underwear is not just to be politically correct and the color is certainly not just white (although a lot of people would argue white is the cleanest and sexiest looking). In modern times it is estimated that Americans spend more than $13 billion on intimate apparel each other, and it makes sense considering underwear comes in different colors, designs, shapes, sizes and styles—from the female boys brief to the male version. Yes, underwear is the common thread that enables us to feel sexy in and outside of the bedroom particularly in the GLBT community, where the underwear fetish in particular is predominant and craved upon. Thank God for Michael Kleinmann, President of Freshpair.com and the co-founder of National Underwear Day. He says that the creation of this unofficial holiday, now in its fourth year, is to bring underwear out of the shadows and into the forefront of fashion. ‘We saw that underwear was in fashion shows and other types of environments but no one really focused solely on underwear and being a retailer we wanted to bring attention to something everybody wears,’ he says. As a retailer of 75 brands of underwear (including: Puma, Wacoal, Papi, Ginch Gonch, Chantelle, and Play to name a few), Freshpair partnered with these companies, utilizing them as sponsors rather than contacting outside underwear suppliers. (Being a a savvy businessman, Kleinmann’s intent was also a strategic move to be the official National Underwear Day supplier.) ‘We thought it would be a good idea to also bring some non-profits on to raise awareness for them because the event gets so much coverage,’ says Kleinmann. ‘ We are involved with the National Prostate Cancer Coalition as well as Breast Cancer Research Foundation.’ Freshpair will make an undisclosed contribution to both charities and hope raising awareness for these two foundations will bring in even more money. National Underwear Day has continuously grown every year, and now, in its fourth year the gala has doubled in size, and now sponsors actually seek Freshpair out to particpate in the event. Kleinmann says that every year they draw a crowd of both curious onlookers and underwear specialists from all walks of life, genders and sexual orientations. This year, everyone has a chance to grab a pair of free chonies (Spanish slang for undies) as Freshpair will be giving out 4,000 pair in Times Square, NYC, for much of that Wednesday morning to the early afternoon hours. ‘We are going to have changing stations setup so that will draw a crowd watching the changing station— people actually going in and changing out of their old underwear and into their Freshpair,”says Kleinmann.

Being a huge spectacle on the streets, he hopes that this year both local and national news take notice— especially Good Morning America who tapes their daily national show in Times Square. Working around underwear everyday, Kleinmann considers himself a cueca (Portugese slang for underwear) lover and is pretty good at predicting the top underwear for the new year so Cybersocket grilled him on his insight (straight men, listen up). ‘Things are definitely getting lower and in terms of men’s underwear they are becoming more fashion oriented with more color and patterns’ says Kleinmann. ‘I think that men are no longer satisfied with black, white or gray. Women’s underwear has traditionally come in fashionable colors and now men are demanding the same choices.’ As for our picks, we definitely think Ginch Gonch is the leader for gay underwear apparel, exploring creative designs that are both fun and sexy. Papi is another brand that is just not for Latino’s, this underwear is daring and delicious to look at and wear. For more underwear site links check out www.cybersocket.com.
