Sex toys have been around ever since humans have had a libido.  The dildo dates back to 500 B.C. when Greek merchants sold “olisbos” to lonely women who’s men were out at sea.  The Asian market got involved in the year 500 with the invention of ben-wa balls and was also responsible for the very first cock ring in 1200 – made from goat eyelids (with the eyelashes still on).  It wasn’t until the 1800s that sex toys became rubberized and we saw the first vibrator.

We sat down with Michael Mickey to give us the 411 of the sex toy business: 

How did you get into the biz? 

I started off with one toy for sale, the ‘Mr. Hankey’. I got the idea to make toys after visiting Mr. S Leather in San Francisco and checking out some of their toys. I thought that I would like to do that, figured that would be a cool hobby. I launched the first toy in 2015 with the intention of making a few extra bucks each month that I could stash away in a college savings account for my newly born son. 

How do you come up with your designs? 

The older, original toys came from me. Then we started working with different designers trying to find someone that we liked. We have settled on one designer now, he does everything for us and thinks of all of our new designs, he’s really an incredible designer. 

How are your new products tested? 

We have a ton of people who promote and review our toys, I suppose you could call that our ‘testing’. Customers also give us great feedback and we use that to continually improve on our designs. Customers give us the most valuable feedback out of everyone. 

Has using sex toys become more openly acceptable and enjoyed over the years?  If so, why do you think? 

Like many aspects of sexuality, sex toys have become much more normalized in everyday life. They are really not very taboo anymore, you will see them on mainstream television, etc. nowadays. Now, some of the stuff we sell…yeah, it’s still taboo. When you have nice innocent-looking dildos, those are generally pretty acceptable but when someone walks in and sees an 18” giant dildo, people still do get pretty shocked. The bigger stuff is still pretty taboo to many people.

 What tips would you give someone, or a couple, who have never used a toy before? 

If it’s from us, choose your size carefully! In general, though, just buy a toy and have fun with it. Get a good quality lube and experiment with it. Be careful, start slow and work your way up until you know your limits and figure out what you like to do with the toy and how you like to use it. Be creative, don’t just assume that laying on your back missionary is all there is, try different positions, try it solo, try it with a friend – just have fun! 

What sets your products apart from others on the market?

You have exact replicas of some of our favorite porn stars – what is the molding process like? 

Well, first we need to find the models, most of them find us though. Once we do that we have them come into our office and we perform a lifecasting on them. This definitely has its challenges as not many people can maintain an erection while performing a lifecasting – we have to work quickly. We use a method that captures every detail, these are exact copies of the real thing. We use proprietary methods to perform the lifecasting and also to resize the toys, not everyone wants the original size, sometimes we may even downsize a bit if the model is really big. We always have the ‘original’ size and include a few larger sizes and maybe one smaller size too. 

What do you want your customers to know most of all about Mr. Hankey’s?  

Visit us often, we are releasing a new toy every couple week going into 2020. Even after we slow down on our releases, we’ll still release a new toy each month. We have a ton of new stuff coming out. If you have not tried one of our toys, you are missing out. Just be sure to choose your sizing wisely, the most common complaint is that someone picked a toy that was too big for their hole – don’t let your eyes get greedier than your hole!
