The Devil Made Me Do It: Gay Porn Gets Diabolical

Demons, satanism, and the occult have been popular themes in gay porn for decades. They’re included in a genre that we like to call “gay diabolica.” Typically, gay diabolica is playful and lighthearted rather than sinister and creepy. One could even argue that gay diabolica is a healthy response to living in a society in which an alarming number of people actually believe that the Devil is real and that he’s out to get them.

From an artistic perspective, it’s possible that the work of author and experimental filmmaker Kenneth Anger may have informed  the gay diabolica genre, too. In films such as Lucifer Rising, Anger often explored homoerotic and occult themes. His style is said to have influenced filmmakers as diverse as Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, and John Waters, so it wouldn’t be surprising if his work also inspired a few gay porn directors.

Since it’s a fun and evocative genre, gay diabolica is regularly revisited by porn studios both large and small. Back in 1998 and 1999, Talos released Hellrazer – a series of three films featuring a devilish Dom named Lucifer and DVD covers plastered with devils, pentagrams, and infernal flames. In 2005, Chi Chi LaRue directed a film for Falcon called Heaven To Hell in which her porn star buddy Dean Monroe played the Devil. In 2007, Hot House released a fetish title called Communion that explored kinky, arcane rituals. Then in 2008, Raging Stallion released a two-part video starring Steve Cruz called Hotter Than Hell about the devil’s minions getting up to no good down in the San Francisco sewers. 2009 brought us Angel and His Bareback Demons from No Cover Productions and then in 2011 and 2012 we had the high profile release of Francois Sagat’s Incubus and Incubus 2.

More recently, Raw Fuck Club played with diabolic themes superficially on the covers of Inner Devil 1 & 2. In contrast, UKNakedMen.com truly went all the way with Get Thee Behind Me  – a new video that includes a Satanic gang bang in which a fallen priest defiles himself with a group of masked transgressors.
