Founded in New York in 1967 by photographer Jim French, COLT has since launchednumerous spin-off lines including BUCKSHOT, the COLT Minute Man Solo Series, Olympus Studios, and COLT Publications (which produces the greeting cards and calendars seen in gay and mainstream shops around the world.) After it’s New York beginnings, COLT was based in Los Angeles for a quarter of a century before finally moving to its current home in San Francisco. In 2003,founder Jim French finally felt he had found two successors whom he could trust to carry on his legacy and he sold the studio to longtime admirers Tom Rutherford and Tom Settle. On Feb 23, 2007, Mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom actually signed a declaration that officially made it “COLT Studio Day” in honor of the profound contribution COLT has made to male erotica and gay culture. After defining a genre, COLT has continued to innovate and flourish under it’s new owners with cutting edge online services and a steady stream of new COLT men.
