Issue 10.4 : Blogging

Upper Echelon Smut Peddlers
By Seth Stewart

It's hard to believe, but even in 2008 the Internet continues to change our lives and to reinvent the ways in which we work, play, and share information. In less than a decade, printed newspapers and magazines — as well as TV news — have ceased to be our preferred sources for breaking news, op-ed, and humor.

Adult entertainment has historically been one of the earliest adopters of almost every new technology, making them a useful barometer of impending paradigm shifts. One of the most recent additions to the adult entertainment world is the blog. As little as 5 years ago, how many people even knew what a blog was? Today, it's almost as common as a business card. Much as music magazines used to be one of the best ways to get the word out about new music releases, porn studios are now using third-party porn blogs to promote their latest films and performers.

After porn studios began issuing daily press releases to bloggers, we started to see a lot of homogeny in the gay porn blogosphere. Since everyone had access to the same information, it didn't really matter whose blog you were reading. To distinguish themselves, bloggers began concentrating on delivering their content in unique ways. Some bloggers are now known for their wit and sarcasm, while others are known for their posting choices. With so many new blogs for surfers to choose from, bloggers began to specialize in very specific genres.

As with any endeavor, there are always certain individuals who stand out for their original work - bloggers who are consistently ahead of the curve and who create trends rather than following them. Here's a quick look at ten of our favorite gay porn blogs - blogs that's continue to set the standards by which we judge other sites.

There's no better place to start than with a veteran of the genre, the Gay Porn Times. Formerly known as The Adams Report by JC Adams, GPT celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2008 and remains one of the most comprehensive sources of porn-related news. Similar to GPT in scope and content, Gay Porn Blog is less journalistic and more dishy, serving up a tasty mix of porn news tidbits and juicy gossip. Co-editors Jack Shamama and Mike Stabile write like they're right down in the porn trenches - because they are! The site's manifesto says, “there's nothing wrong with being delighted by the dirty, charmed by the crass, or preoccupied with porn.” The third heavy hitter in the adult entertainment news world is Fleshbot, covering both gay and straight porn. Fleshbot also pulls from the mainstream news, filling us in about all the latest celebrity sex tapes and sexual scandals.

For something a little more brainy and introspective, there's no better place than Nightcharm. Nightcharm consistently delivers a seamless mélange of scintillating porn fare, biting wit, entertaining cultural meditations, and smart social commentary. The result is a sexy and stylish site with lots of loyal readers. David K., the site's webmaster, also moonlights as a regular commentator on the hilariously twisted Lurid Digs, a blog that posts self-portraits from hook-up sites and discusses the background in the photos. The site employs a fleet of witty contributors who are dedicated to picking apart the decor and furnishings that appear in these endlessly entertaining (and frightening) self-portraits. Think World of Interiors meets Men of Playgirl.

Some of the other outstanding gay porn blogs include the popular Queer Click, which blossomed from a “one man pushcart” into a superhuman team of contributors who now provide a dizzying number of updates each and every day. Visitors can also upload their personal snapshots to a public archive that now contains over 10,000 candid images. Likewise, Queer Bites does a fine job of whetting your sexual appetite with its eclectic content. Written by Cooper, a self-styled “porn enthusiast,” Queer Bites manages to be both artsy and informative. It’s a winning combination that has loyal surfers checking in daily.

Despite the fact that they are ultimately just pushing their own brand, some of the blogs affiliated with pay sites are actually worth reading. Some of the most notable examples include Frisky News, a twink-oriented blog affiliated with Frisky Fans, the Lavender Lounge Blog, and Juicy Goo's GooGabber. These blogs all contain an amazing array of steamy free content peppered with breaking porn news and gossip.

These are some of the superstars of gay porn blogging, but there are many more. The list goes on and on… and on. This proliferation of blogs is part of what makes the gay porn blogging world so entertaining. It represents endless variety, with hundreds of tomorrow’s most popular bloggers waiting to be discovered. So log on and strap in, because it's going to be a bumpy ride!

You've seen him naked on film and maybe you've even whacked off to his image, but it's always fascinating to go into a porn star's private world and to see what they are all about. Jason Ridge's blog does just that by giving you a peek into his hopes, dreams, and disappointments. Some might say that this takes the mystery out of the fantasy, but Jason manages to share himself without losing his appeal.

Very few artists are as difficult to label as Bruce LaBruce. The eclectic director/photographer - better known for his art house film Super 8 1/2 - has an interesting blog that features some of his most arresting photographs. It's clear that Bruce's brilliant mind is trying to escape the confines of our scripted world, and in doing so he enters territory that is at turns beautiful, mysterious, surreal, and terrifying. He's the Charles Baudelaire of a new era.

So far horror writer Rick Reed has penned seven ghoulish tales. From vampires to Internet serial killers Rick is constantly finding new ways to exploit our worst fears.. His latest release, Deadly Vision, tells the story of a small-town, single mother who becomes a reluctant psychic after experiencing a head injury and then begins to see the brutal slayings of innocent teenagers. The books are being sold on Amazon, with e-book versions available through Kindle.

Tribe is equal parts message board, blog, and social network. Tribes can be created around any topic and communities spring up around them. This tribe is dedicated to Midnight Mass, the legendary San Fransisco film festival curated by infamous cult leader/up-and-coming filmmaker Peaches Christ. She's always in search of new blood, so check it out.
